Activities in the Area :: Knysna :: Garden Route :: South Africa Boating on the Lagoon Turnhill Self Catering Cottage has two canoes situated on Knysna Lagoon. In addition we have our own jetty at Belvidere Jetty where with prior arrangement you could moor your boat should we not be using it at the time or can arrange to hire a jetty for longer periods. The lagoon is excellent for water skiing, wave boarding, wind surfing, sailing and kite surfing. Fishing charters can be arranged from the jetty should you be interested Golf Knysna is blessed with three excellent golf courses:
Birding Belvidere has a bird list of some 140 species that have been recorded over the last two years, some 60 of these can be seen in our own garden. There are wonderful walks within the village of Belvidere and parklands, that give an opportunity to observe: Water birds along Knysna lagoon shore, Forest birds in the forest adjacent to Knysna Lagoon and fynbos and seed eaters on the hill to the south of Belvidere. There are excellent birding spots and hides in the nature reserves around the Garden Route all within 50 kms of the cottage Hiking There are numerous walks within Belvidere that you can enjoy without getting into your car. But Knysna is renowned for their magnificent forest walks and beach walks a book is available in the cottage detailing all the walks available. Beaches Knysna has at least 6 beaches within 15kms of Turnhill Cottage some of which I would rate as the best beaches in South Africa. They all offer good swimming and surfing. There are a number of wild beaches with spectacular cliffs and rocky outcrops and if you are looking for a gentle paddle there is nothing better than the Knysna Lagoon right at our doorstep!
Exploring the area There are some excellent byways to out of the way places all within a days drive from Belvidere. Enjoy the old architecture in towns like Oudtshoorn, wine and Port tasting at Calitzdorp, or test your skills on mountain passes such as the Swartberg Pass, Prince Afred's Pass or the Montagu Pass. There are also some very challenging 4x4 trails within the area
Nature Reserves and Parks Knysna is soon to be proclaimed part of a new National Park that includes the Knysna Lagoon and the forests and lakes that surround it. On the Garden Route there are a number of exciting places to visit:
